SNAPSHOT-Latest developments in Myanmar protests

Sept 27 (Reuters) - Here are the latest developments in the pro-democracy protests in Myanmar on Thursday.

HEADLINES

* U.S. demands Myanmar junta call an immediate halt to crackdown on protesters.

* Japan to protest to Myanmar government over death of Japanese photographer.

* Sporadic bursts of automatic rifle fire echo over Yangon as darkness falls and curfew goes into effect.

* Nine protesters killed, 11 wounded in Yangon, state television says. Among those killed is a Japanese photographer.

* Monks rounded up and shoved onto trucks in raids on monasteries. One monk killed; scores kicked and beaten by soldiers. Some of the monasteries are emptied of all but the very old and sick, people living nearby say.

* Diplomats summoned to capital, Naypyidaw, "the government was committed to showing restraint in its response to the provocations", one of those present says.

* China, one of Myanmar's few allies, calls for restraint for the first time.

* U.N. Secretary-General to dispatch special envoy to Southeast Asia in hope generals will let him in.
